After washing his hands thoroughly, Adam opened the refrigerator door and grimaced. It was clear that Tania wasn’t a cook, at least not on a regular basis.

He tossed aside pizzas and ready-made pasta meals. Somewhere there had to be fresh food. In the background, he heard the drone of the shower pump. It was tempting to slip into her bathroom and join her. However, he was determined to change her habits.

He found cooked ham, which had come from the delicatessen counter, onions, mozzarella cheese and penne pasta. As he prepared the dish, he conjured up a meal he could do for her in his apartment—brown rice, tender lamb with a light curry flavor. The picture of her in his apartment caused him to pause in his onion chopping. His eyes prickled and watered. He wiped them with the back of his hand. What would she make of his home?

It wasn’t the pokey living room—he preferred to relax in his bedroom and watch television—nor was it his kitchen-diner, which was a fair size and modern in design. It was the basement, his converted spatial room that bothered him. Did he show Tania what lurked downstairs? Would she freak out and end their newly created relationship for good? At the same time, the idea of having her down there was tantalizing and highly desirable. Time would tell. It generally did, in his opinion.

Adam whistled to himself as he fried the onions and boiled the penne, then added melted cheese and strips of ham along with a little basil. The shower had gone quiet and he waited for Tania to reappear. To his delight, she had simply slipped on a dressing gown and her wet hair clung to her face.

“That was good,” she said, emerging. “Smells delicious.”

“Pasta bowl?” he inquired.

She set the table and filled wine glasses, not with the red she had proposed, but water. Her choice pleased him. She did listen to him.

“Don’t you want anything?” she asked, as he served up the one helping.

“I ate earlier—as you should have done.”

“I don’t want to eat alone.”

Adam raised his eyebrows. “Small helping, then.”

He found another bowl and gave himself a lesser portion. Silence descended as she ate. He didn’t want to interrupt her. Clearly she was hungrier than she had implied.

“This is excellent, Adam,” she said between mouthfuls.

“Thank you,” he replied graciously.

Eventually her chewing slowed and she sloshed down the water.

“You always eat in a hurry, don’t you?” he noted.

“Occupational hazard,” she said with a shrug.

“Bad practice. You will ruin your digestive system.”

“Are you my doctor now?” she griped with a smile.

“I’ll have to take care of you more than I first thought,” he dared to say.

She didn’t reject his proposal but it gave birth to silence.

“Do I offend you, Tania?” he asked gently.

She shook her head and pushed her empty bowl to one side. “I’ve never had anyone look after me before. Well, not since my parents.”

“You’re an independent woman, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a guardian angel to take care of you,” he said, reaching out to take her hand.
